There are many people out there that would much rather use wooden dog crates instead of the more traditional metal variety information can be found in a dog buying guide. This could be because a lot of people find that the ones that are made from wood tend to be much stringer and sturdier than the ones which are made from wire metals. They also cost considerably less than their metal counterpart. In addition, after your dog has outgrown his/her enclosure, you can start using it to store home items.
If you are interested in using a wooden crate for your dog, then to begin with you must have some idea of how to build wooden dog crates. It’s probably best that you know how to do it yourself, instead of purchasing one from your local pet store.
Provided below are the steps required to build wooden dog crates:
1. Determine how large the crate will be. This depends entirely on your dog’s size. If your dog is just a small puppy, then you should be able to make do with a small one. Measure your dog’s size and give a few extra inches for the crate enclosure. This will give the dog some space for toys and food. Ensure that your dog does not feel isolated inside the crate. Make sure there is enough room inside the crate so that your dog can move around freely and play with his/her toys.
2. Make sure you cut your woods according to your measured size. It’s possible for plywood to be used. Make it into 25 ½ by 33 ½ inches if the measurements you have are 24 by 32. Again, this is to ensure that there is enough additional space in the crate, and will also ensure that you have enough area to place the nails. These extra inches will be used for the placement of your nails.
3. Make sure the ends of the wood pieces are measured. The measurements that you get should be used to cut the pine boards, to add support and strength to the wooden crate. You need to cut flush pieces with the edges.
4. After you have done that, you can begin to attach the end pieces and boards together. Ensure that you nail the plywood through the pine, and then into the plywood, which should be done about once for each gap of four inches from the center.
5. Using your own measuring tape, measure the space that exists between the side pieces and the pine boards. All the pieces should fit into place perfectly, however, if a second measurement is required, then a second attempt is recommended.
6. Now the using the end pieces you can attach the base of the crate. You can get some assistance from a friend, if you need it. Someone will need to hold the crate while, the base is being attached. The plywood should be nailed around the pine boards.
7. Attach the front and back pieces.
8. Turn the pen over, so that you can secure all of the corners, and ensure that they are all attached properly. Make sure you nail the pen every three inches.
9. After you have completed that, next attach the door hinges for the crate. Again, you must ensure that the door is wide enough for your dog to be able to get in and out of.
